I love the moon and always have. I've always been fascinated by her impact on me and I've learned to honour myself and my yoga practice by the phases of the moon. Here's why....
Firstly, the moon has a powerful effect on our planet, which is apparent when watching the ocean’s tides. In turn it also has a potent influence on our minds, bodies, emotions and behaviours (well, we are made up of 60% water aren’t we!?).
Yoga focuses on balancing the mind, body and spirit. Hatha yoga (which is how most people refer to the physical aspect of yoga) means ‘sun’ (ha-) and ‘moon’ (-tha). This refers to the balance of the masculine and feminine aspects within each of us. The masculine part of each of us is the sun—hot and dynamic. The feminine is the moon—cool and receptive.
This is why the moon is especially important for women - it’s full of feminine energy! It represents wisdom, intuition and the cycle of birth, death, and reincarnation.
Channelling the energy of the moon in each phase of its cycle takes us deeper into our yoga practice. Starting simply, the four main lunar phases are great focal points to align your practice and to find that balance.
New Moon
The beginning of the lunar cycle. It’s a time to set intentions and start a fresh. I love this time; a clean slate for all your projects and unlimited possibilities ahead of you!
Yoga practice
Nurturing, restorative and focusing on the breath.
First Quarter
The moon is half full, showing it’s time to take action and make some decisions.
Yoga practice
Increasing in energy, grounding, strong poses and a powerful Savasana.
Full Moon
Ah, the beauty! The energy is at its highest and it’s time to celebrate how far you’ve come!
Yoga practice
Energetic or intense, a time to expel all those crazy high emotions!
Last Quarter
A time to decide what is no longer serving you and gently start to release it.
Yoga practice
Releasing, opening or inward poses.
Our beautiful women’s classes are designed around the moon's phases, helping us to find balance and honour ourselves when we need it most.
